Family Planning:
Influenza Pandemic Survival or Contingency Plans. (Part 2)
More Practical steps you and your family can take to protect yourselves against any form of influenza pandemic
What will I do with my children?
REASON TO ASK :: During an influenza pandemic, schools
will be closed initially. Kids of all ages get bored. In case of quarantine, you
should plan games, entertainment and education whether it be reading books or
learning a new hobby or skill.
What will I do with my pets?
REASON TO ASK :: Pets need and want to get outside.
However, since they don't know the risk they may carry the flu virus from their
ventures outside. Have disinfectants available which are safe for animals and
consider ways to keep them closer to home - perhaps a long leash. It is possible
your health authorities will suggest a temporary shelter for your pets. Ask well
in advance.
Where do I get face masks, gloves and goggles?
REASON TO ASK :: Although face masks, gloves and
goggles are being stock-piled for health workers, healthy individuals will be
required to get their own and prices
WILL go up when the pandemic starts. Face masks are not proven to be effective
against a Pandemic but were helpful in the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong according
to many experts. Face masks help a) protect the individual and b) help reduce
infection to others. (Complete details on Face Masks are on our
Face Mask page. Also, some of the adverts on this page link to
face masks. Press Refresh
to see more links.)
NOTE: The WHO does not specify in its national plans face masks or goggles. Some national plans have included them. Goggles will be required for health workers in close contact to infected individuals (in hospitals for example). More information and specific sources are in our Pandemic section.
Where do I get disinfectants?
REASON TO ASK :: Aside from the same reasons about
face masks and gloves, not everyone knows where to get disinfectants. The time
to find out is now.
Where do I get money?
REASON TO ASK :: In the short term, it is likely that
banks will be closed and ATM's (Automatic Teller Machines) will run out of cash.
In the long-term, economic chaos will ensue due to businesses shutting down,
employee sickness and yes, deaths. Even the culling of millions of birds has
already had an impact on many countries and farmers. It will be helpful if you have a supply
of cash on-hand.
How long will this last?
REASON TO ASK :: Long-term planning is important.
Influenza pandemics generally have two or three waves. From start to finish this
could last anywhere up to 14 months. What does that mean for you and your
family? Are you prepared?
Start asking your boss, your church leaders, your doctor, your pharmacist, your school director, your club leaders and friends what they know. In the multitude of counselors there is wisdom. Check your local health care websites and city or regional government sites.
No one knows when a flu pandemic will occur, but with 10 in the last 300 years and 3 in the last 100 years, you need to be aware and prepare – now. Our children are at risk.
Food for Thought
Should I live in fear?
REASON TO ASK :: Many people thrive on fear. However, the message needs to be clear - fear is not the key. We need to have
hope, not just in our ability to survive, but that God has a purpose for us here
on earth and that that purpose is far and beyond pandemics, Avian influenza
viruses or whatever.
